Descendants of Henry Michael Whittenburg

Generation No. 1

1. HENRY MICHAEL1 WHITTENBURG was born 1712 in Germany (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died Abt January 19, 1767 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). He married ANNA MARIA BENEDICT. She was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania (Source: www.rootsweb.com.).

Henry Michael Wurtenberg, arrived in the United States of America aboard the ship "SHIRLEY" on 5 Sep 1751, at the port of Philadelphia, PA. Pennsylvania German Pioneers- Strassburger & Hinke, page 454.

Our ancestors didn't speak English when they arrived in America over 245 years ago. The English ship clerk would write down an illiterate passenger's name as the passenger spoke it. The passenger would then sign with an "X". This was the case with Henry Michael, and his son Hans Georg, they both signed the passenger list with an X. Henry Michael's name was on the list as Wurtenberg(er). Wurtenberg is what the clerk was writing, the (er) being added to show the similarity/relationship to Hans. Hans Georg's name was on the list as Wurteberger.

The two appeared on a Philadelphia Co., PA tax list for 1751. Later that year that part of Philadelphia Co. became Berks County. We next find Henry as a renter ("inmate") in Windsor Township, Berks Co., PA. Over the years their names appear on Tax List- Henry as head of family and his sons listed as single men.

In 1765, Rev. Daniel Schumacher, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Windsor Twp., listed the following children in a confirmation record - Conrad Wittenberger, Joseph Wittenberger and Elizabeth Wittenberger. Shortly after this Henry moved his family to North Carolina where in Mecklenburg County, N.C estate records, Frederick Whittenburg was granted executor of Henry's estate on 19 Jan 1767.

The identity of Henry's wife remains unknown.

Child of HENRY WHITTENBURG and ANNA BENEDICT is:

2. i. FREDERICK2 WHITTENBURG, b. 1737, North Carolina; d. October 25, 1804, Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee.

Generation No. 2

2. FREDERICK2 WHITTENBURG (HENRY MICHAEL1) was born 1737 in North Carolina (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died October 25, 1804 in Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). He married MARGARET BENSON (Source: www.gencircles.com.). She was born 1748 in North Carolina (Source: www.rootsweb.com.).

From http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~stelly/webfam.htm:

138. Frederick WHITTENBERG was born about 1737 in North Carolina. He died on 25 Oct 1804 in Greenville, Greene County, Tennessee.

Frederick was born in Germany. For the book "Historic Greene Co., TN- It's People 1783-1792", Betty Whittenburg Bagley wrote the article "First American Whittenburg Family", she gives us Frederick's birth date as about 1737. I feel that this estimate of Frederick's birth date is accurate (that puts Frederick at 14 yrs. old when they came to the U.S. in 1751). Frederick became executor of his father Henry's estate- 17 Jan 1767, he was most likely the married & more responsible one of the family. Frederick married Margrette (BENSON?) probably in PA before the family moved to NC in the 1760's. North Carolina land records show Frederick lived on Lyle's Creek in Catawba County, NC. He was very instrumental in the early years of the family in NC. The 1800 census of Dauphin Co., PA has a Margrette Whittenberg listed as head of household. I believe this Margaret is Frederick's wife having gone back to PA to visit her aging widowed mother. We find record of Frederick in the "NC Land Grants in Tennessee 1778-1791" National Archives- microfilm #024,541-roll #68. Frederick Whittenberg died, 25 Oct 1804 Greenville, Greene Co., TN. ----John G. Wittenberg (Web Site)
