No documentation has yet been found to indicate who William Welch's parents were. William may have had a Scotch or Scotch-Irish Origin. The first Federal US Census taken in 1790 shows 390 Welch heads of families and 1,782 scattered throughout the 13 colonies, with most being in Pennsylvania which had 79 families of the same name. If they were of Scotch heritage, they were most likely Presbyterian.

When the Protestant Reformation of the 17th century challenged the authority of the Catholic Church, the people of Scotland adopted the Protestant cause and stern doctrines of their great theologian, John Knox. It is likely that my Welch heritage is Scotch or Scotch-Irish and Presbyterian. By the time the Welch people moved into the Carolinas, they were Baptist.

It is believed that James Welch was a farmer around Sadsbury Township of Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1754. It is reported by some researchers that he was buried in Olde Covenant Cemetery, Lancaster, PA but I have not seen this document.

The name Sadsbury, a township in Chester County, was first called Sudsbury. It was founded in 1707 and is located on the west edge of Chester County bordering Lancaster County. It is not certain that there was a Sadsbury or Sudsbury in Lancaster County, PA.

In July 1774, John's plantation where his widow lived in Rowan County, North Carolina, was ordered sold at auction to settle debts. The sale took place in October and it was sold to the highest bidder, Nicholas WELCH.[NI:2378:NI]

John married Elizabeth in Quittapahilla Township, by Casper STOEVER, Lutheran Minister. About a year before the marriage, John received a land grant in Lebanon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for 150 acres of land.

"In February 1746/7, John sold the 150 acres granted him in 1737.

On 24 October 1759 John received a Majesties' Patent for land on the Catawba River in Anson County, North Carolina (24 34 acres). In 1761 he received Land Grant No. 1966 for 200 acres of land in Anson County, North Carolina on Clarke Creek. When this land was surveyed his son, Nicholas, was one of the chain bearers.

The North Carolina counties are confusing.

• *Anson County was formed in 1749 from Bladden County
• *Rowan County was formed in 1753 from Anson County
• *Mecklenburg County was formed in 1762 from Anson County
• *Burke County was formed 1777 from Rowan County
• *Tryon County was formed in 1769 from Mecklenburg County
• *Lincoln and Rutherford Counties were formed in 17779 from the "Old" Tryon area which ceased to exist at this time. In December 17892, the General Assembly established a new boundary line between Burke and Lincoln Counties, adding a part of Burke County to Lincoln County.

All these changes complicate our research."

"Johns will was probated 1769 in Tryon County, North Carolina. Sons Thomas and Nicholas and wife Margaret were named executors of his will in Tryon County June 5. His will mentioned an unborn child.

The children of Rachel WELCH in the 1880 census reports, give her birthplace as North Carolina and as Kentucky. Her family seems to have been in North Carolina when she was born, but may have moved to Kentucky when she was a small child.

Rachel died before 1850 at approximately 63 years of age. We know she died before this time because her husband's entry on the 1850 Mortality Schedule lists him as widower.

Notes for MOSES NORMAN: The family of Moses moved from North Carolina to Rutherford County, Tennessee, in 1801 while it was still a wilderness. It has been said that the Normans were hunters and trappers.

Moses is mentioned in 1809 in Rutherford County when he helped build a road. He was not in the 1810 census for Rutherford County.

The following narrative is from the "Neel/Barefoot Family Association Newsletter dated August 2000 and authored by Betty N. McDougald.

A petition from settlers in the double Head Reserve was signed in 1810. The petitioners seem to have been located in present day Lauderdale County, Alabama, near the cities of Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Florence and Sheffield. The cities are along the Tennessee River. Signers of interest are: William Welch, Moses Norman, William Welch Jr., and James Welch.

Moses was on the tax list for Giles County in 1812. His father-in-law William Welch was on the same tax list.

In 1811 and 1812 some severe earthquake tremors occurred. They were known as the "New Madrid Earthquakes" that formed Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee. It is not know what influence this had on the Norman Family.

An obituary for William W. Norman, a son of Moses, states, "His parents immigrated to Missouri December 1815 when he was only seven years of age and settled in Cape Girardeau County, nine miles west of Marble Hill (now Bollinger County) where he grew to manhood."

They had moved on to another frontier. In 1817 Moses was on a tax list in Cape Girardeau County for one dwelling in the German Township. At that time, purchases of U.S. Land in Missouri were exempt from land taxes for the next five years after purchase. 1822 was the first time Moses was found paying taxes on land. Caroline's family probably moved to Missouri at the same time.

Moses and his family were on the 1830 census in Wayne County, Missouri. This same he administered the will of his father-in-law who had died in 1820. Moses was to replace the administrator of the estate, a son of William Welch, who had died.

Goodspeed's "History of Southeast Missouri" says, "In 1831, Moses Norman, a native of Alabama, located on West Prairie. He had previously lived near Marble Hill."

Moses and his family were listed in Stoddard County, Missouri, in the 1840 census. Census records show that they had many children. We have only been able to identify a few. Those early census reports only named the heads of households.

Moses died in July of 1849 in Stoddard County. According to the Stoddard County Mortality Schedule, he was a widower when he died, therefore Rachel died before July 1840.
