Notes for "HETTIE" ESTHER SHOEN: Hettie had a son William Hinckle, but it is unknown if she was married to a man named Hinckle. The christening certificate of John Horn, Jr lists her maiden name as Hinckle. She was later married to John Strosse (Strausaur) according to census records. Boy, I wish all census records would list the county and not just the state. Anyway it is odd that for three they listed county and then opted to use state and then back to location again. What makes this interesting is that here Daniel is listing his father as being born in Germany. Maybe he just did not know. Put this puts Daniel and Catherine closer to Freeland where we locate Catherine in 1900. So for some reason he migrated as follows
Three children of Daniel are buried Mt. Zion Cemetery, located about four miles southeast of the town of Nescopeck on the old turnpike. It was originally called the Nescopeck church. Though the church is in Nescopeck Twp. at times it was reported to be in Sloyersville and Briggsville. There are no church records from 1816 to 1822. In 1812 it was a Reformed church and the pastor from Easton.

He married (1) "ELLEN" ELIZABETH ELENORA MINNICH May 18, 1855 in Sugarloaf Twp, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania (Source: Mildred Dotterer via Cassie Pidcock.). She was born Abt 1839 in Pennsylvania. He married (2) MARY CATHERINE ? Aft. 1880 in Missouri (Source: Mildred Dotterer via Cassie Pidcock.). Census Info:1870 Missouri, Lawrence Co. Buck Prairie Twp, household 153 line 10 Notes from Mildred Dotterer via Cassie Pidcock: Daniel's brother, William B. Hinkle was baptized in St. James Church, Nescopeck Twp, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. (Shaffer's Records):
1868 According to the family records William B. Hinkle lived in Banks Twp about 9 years, then lived for a time in Hanover Twp, then in Jeddo, Luzerne Co, PA before moving in 1868 to Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri. He remained there until he died. The surname Hinkle may be HINKEL. Mary Elizabeth Seburn Taylor used ..kle. However all the tombstones are spelled ...kel and probably were all bought by Ivan Lassfiel Seburn who apparently used the spelling in their family Bible. William B. HINKEL has a very large grey granite tombstone. Buried by him are his son Charles Benton Elmer HINKEL and William's first wife Elizabeth Elenore( Minnick)Hinkle FAUNCE, whom he did not get along with and their children buried her by him. She had married second William Faunce. (her name Faunce in the sexton of the cemetery's records and on the tombstone but I have not found a Faunce. Would it be FAUST? They did not live long together before they divorced or separated. She then lived with her son Charles HINKLE until she died. William also re-married, probably in Stone County, (Mrs. Mary Catherine Stone) the mother of a tavern keeper in that county by the name of Dick Stone.
According to Ferle (Walker) wife of Ed Barker and aunt of Anna Margaret Seburn, the daughter of Harry Seburn Edith Walker and Margaret Seburn they could well remember "The Bloody Bucket" as they called the "road house". Ferle said David Floyd "Dutch" Seburn was a part-owner of the roadhouse with Dick Stone )and they would come home bloody from the fights that were there. -1998-1999. The road house was on Spring Creek. Spring Creek is over by Verona, MO and also there is the German community that moved there in 1874 "from Prussia, Germany". This settlement is mentioned in the Lawrence County Atlas and William Schoen as arriving in 1874. The atlas was printed 1879. The 1880 Census is very faded for the entire German settlement but William Schoen is on it. I don't think they came from Germany. Actually William B. Hinkle lived only 7 miles from this settlement and the "Bloody Bucket" was probably in the settlement. The settlement according to the atlas was about 4 miles square and had 50 families by 1879. (Were these people actually from Germany or were they from Pennsylvania after the Civil War-German speaking then and still German speaking in the Luzerne area they were from.) William's grandson a co-owner with Dick Stone and that is apparently where William B. Hinkle met his second wife Mary Catherine, the mother of Dick Stone and Sophia Stone Bird and William married Mary without the rest of the family knowing it.
William was a blacksmith, previous to his arrival to Lawrence County, probably in the mines in Pennsylvania. He had" miner's lung" and moved to Missouri to the rich lead and zinc mining town of Aurora. He first lived in Buck Prairie which was east of Aurora, toward Marionville, Missouri and the Ryker's lived that direction also. In 1879 he lived south of Aurora, MO owning 120 acres. William bought the "Seburn" farm one-half mile south of Aurora from the present Hwy 37 on the county line, a paved road turning right only, then one eighth mile west. This farm was on rolling land and was considered one of the finer farms of the area. The unmarried Seburn boys kept Hereford cattle and their unmarried sister, "Gert" took care of another sister "Jane" and did the cooking and cleaning. The house was situated immediately adjacent to the paved road in front of it. There was an immense red barn behind the house, a smoke house, hen house, and other outbuildings in the 1950's. The barn was torn down by the 1990's. Also by the 1990's was the immense old oak tree in the back yard, as were all the old oak trees in Aurora on Oak Avenue. By the 1990's the city limits of Aurora were half a mile closer to the farm, or more with Highway 60 being about the half-way mark. The original house was very plain, with no adornments, sided with cut board siding. It had only a few windows and they were long and narrow paned glass. The house had a front porch facing the road that was only about thirty feet south of the house. And just the other side of the road was Stone County. The front door opened directly into the parlor, the dining room behind the parlor, and the kitchen behind it. Beside the parlor was a bedroom and going on to the back of the house, was another bedroom. The stair going up was in the dining room and led to bedrooms upstairs. A door led out of the kitchen and a smoke house was just outside the kitchen. North of the house was a huge red barn. Cattle and hogs were raised on the farm. Through the years it was improved and in the 1950's had shingles of the then-popular hard asbestos. In the 1990's the same house has all new siding with an added porch having tall pillars as in "Tara" in Gone With the Wind and the design would be a real surprise to William Hinkle the practical farmer with the plain practical home.
William lived with his daughter and her husband, Margareth Erdilla "Maggie" Hinkle and Ivan Lassfield Seburn, and Maggie reigned over the farm and family according to her daughter-in-law Ethel Beatrice Davis Seburn, wife of Charles Marquis (Marcus) and went by C.M. Seburn and Mark Seburn. Ethel being strong minded herself never got along with Maggie. See also notes under ELIZABETH ELLENER "Ellen" (Minnick) HINKLE from a cassette tape as narrated by Ethel Beatrice (Davis) Seburn, wife of Charles Marquis "Mark" Seburn, the grandson of William B. Hinkle and Ellen Minnick. He lived in the same house as his grandfather.

Notes for "ELLEN" ELIZABETH ELENORA MINNICH: Census Info:1870 Missouri, Lawrence Co. Buck Prairie Twp, household 153 line 10 Notes for ELIZABETH ELENORA MINNICH: Notes from Mildred Dotterer via Cassie Pidcock: My grandmother was Ethel B. Davis and she married Charles Marquis "Mark" Seburn, the son of Margareth Erdilla "Maggie" Hinkle and Ivan Lassfield Seburn. Elizabeth Ellener "Ellen" Minnick was Maggie's mother and William B. Hinkle her father. Ellen was the daughter of Nancy Troy and Charles Minnick. Ellen (Minnick) Hinkle was of a different cut of cloth for the times. She was very independent. And was doctoring without a license riding around the country on a side saddle, to the poor of Lawrence County, Missouri, a lead and zinc mining town. The following is a direct quote of my grandmother in her own words exactly as she said it, on a cassette tape I still have. It was taped when she was 87years old about Elizabeth Ellen (Minnick) Hinkle. Rosebud was probably a nickname for Ellen (Minnick) Hinkle's daughter Belle Robertine Hinkle. and they called her Rose. On her tombstone it is Belle Hinkle and in the Wheat book it is Bella Robertine Hinkle. I don't know if Ellen was a romantic or where she got the names for her children as they don't seem to come from either the Hinkle's or the Minnick's. ......and the story by ETHEL BEATRICE (SEBURN) DAVIS ELIZABETH ELLENER "Ellen" MINNICK daughter of CHARLES MINNICH and NANCY TROY first wife of WILLIAM B. HINKLE and a wife of WILLIAM FAUNCE, her second husband "Mark's Grandmother (Elizabeth Ellen Minnick Hinkle) was a doctor. She went horseback. "There was a smallpox then and it was very raging. She would hear of a family and she would go to the drug store and get Epsom salts. And she taken honey with her, bee honey. When she went into this home regardless if the children were big enough at all she would give them a dose of Epsom salts. This honey she would put in the drinking water and in everything she cooked, had bee honey in it. She would get them all up and out because that germ cannot live where honey is. She was a naturalist (with medicine). Then she got to where she would go for miles and stay a week with them and get them up an on their feet. Well, they got to where they wouldn't call the doctor, they'd get word to her and she would come. They (the doctors), threatened her. They said if she didn't quit going and doctoring they were going to sue her. She said, "Well, they are poor people. They couldn't pay you for coming at all and I never charge them." She had to quit because they (the doctors) were so hot on her. This was Lawrence County (Missouri). She had this one horse she rode sidesaddle. She had Rosebud, Margaret, and Charley (her children). I saw her once or twice. She was a smart person, not very tall, medium (build) and weight, and very piercing black eyes and dark hair. She married William Hinkle. He was a big, big, man, a blacksmith, and a very big nice looking man I was told. I never did see him.
They separated (Ellen Minnick and William Hinkle) and he came and lived with Mark's mother, his daughter Margaret, for years and years. He had all this land out there South of town and he had a 160 acres on the road front. He willed her the 160 acres. She (Ellen Minnick Hinkle) married again (to William Faunce) and separated again, at Aurora. Her first husband William never did marry again.* She (Ellen Minnick Hinkle Faunce) lived with her son, Charles Hinkle until she died. They all lived right around Aurora." *In fact, William Hinkle did marry again but it was a scandal as the Seburn family did not approve of the marriage. He married Mary Catherine___ who had a son Dick Stone and as a Harry Bird ordered her interment in the Maple Park Cemetery, she may have had at least one other marriage to a Mr. Bird. Dick Stone had a road house on Spring River near Aurora, with the grandson of William B. Hinkle, who was unmarried David Floyd "Dutch" Seburn and this was probably where William met Mary Catherine. "Neither she nor Dick Stone had a very good reputation", according to my Aunt Mary Elizabeth (Seburn) Taylor, daughter of Ethel B. Davis Seburn, who told me about William's second marriage. A first cousin, still living, and her aunt remember the roadhouse well and the Seburn's called it the "Bloody Bucket.
