Liverpool & SW Lancs FHS Poll Book 1832: Thomas Rainford, Cabinet Maker, Duckinfield Street, Liverpool, E & T, BGS/FMN The Rainford family owned a brewery which was very profitable. Dr George (Thomas' son) would tell his grandson Ervin, while making calls to his patients, about some of his memories as a little boy in England. One memory is as follows: Whenever there was a social event his mother, Sarah, would have the bank bring over her jewels. She would lay them out on her bed so she could decide which jewels would best match the outfit she was to wear. After she chose, she would have the bank return her remaining jewels to the bank for safe keeping. Of course, when the social event was over she would also return those jewels to the bank. Ride to the hounds was a family sport. Similar to chasing the fox. A horn was used made out of a Cow antler or some other animals antler. Someone in our family has Dr. George's horn. Wilmington Twp, household 165 line 37 1880 Indiana, Newton Co. Lake Village, household 9 line 1 Education: Degree in Medicine from medical school in England. He doctored in New York and Kankakee Co. in Illinois. The story begins with the birth of a baby boy; whom some would say was born with a "silver spoon" in his mouth. His parents were able to give him the best of everything, which included a fine education. He could have become one of the "Dandies" about town going to parties and the theatre, wasting his life. These things had no interest to him. Medicine and caring for others was what direction his education took. His family approved until ... He met and fell in love with a beautiful young lady Harriet Strickland, the daughter of a tenant farmer who was living on one of his fathers farms. There was a very strict caste-system in place at the time. The family was so unhappy with this and when he insisted on marrying Harriet, his parents disowned him. They felt their son had married beneath them. Dr George Rainford took his bride and opened an office to practice in Haymarket. (It is now the theatrical section of London). Things were going well when a pestilence and a famine came to England. (This pestilence must have been like the flu epidemic of 1918). Doctors were in great demand. Food was scarce for all except the very rich. Dr George's parents came and thought he should come take care of them and his former friends. Instead, he went to the country and took care of his wife's family and friends. He would bring them extra food that he could find which didn't take away from his own family's needs. His parents continued to pressure him so to escape this he decided to bring his family (three children - George, Mary, and Harriet - and his wife Harriet) to the United States for a new start. Two infant sons were left behind, buried, in England. Dr George Rainford immigrated from London between 1847 and 1849. After being in the USA, a son Robert, was born September 13, 1849 in Joliet, Illinois. Harriet became ill and died in 1851. Dr Rainford later moved to Rock Creek or Rockville, Illinois. While living here he was called to attend a hired man who was employed at the McElvain farm. He left medicine and promised to return the next morning when he thought he would be more likely to diagnose the trouble. On his return the following day, as he entered the door, he stopped and exclaimed "SMALLPOX"! (parts taken from Kankakee Daily Journal Jan 7, 1851). Dr Rainford refused to take charge of the case. He had a family dependent upon him. To take on this case would mean deliberately endangering his family. After looking around a bit, they finally found Dr Van Riper to take the case. Most of his family had the disease. Even with medical attention, the hired man, Grandmother McElvain, and the youngest child Greer died from the disease. Dr George Rainford met his second wife when he was working as a doctor. Margaret Wilcox was his helper when he went out to visit patients. They were married Jan 12, 1854 and had 12 children. (Marriage Record says July 12, 1855 George Rainford married Margaret Wilcox by William Tallman Justice of the Peace) Milton Rainford seems to be the only one of his family that Dr George had contact with after he left England. Some say Milton was a brother of Dr George. Belle Rainford Mashino remembers being taught to call him "Cousin Milt". Milton came to the USA to perform the opening night of the Old McVickers Theater in Chicago, Illinois (this theater is now over 100 years old). One story says Milton was a concert violinist but Belle Mashino says he was an opera singer. While Milton was still in Chicago, Dr George brought his son William to Chicago to hear Milton perform. Since William had shown an early interest in the violin, Milton went with him to help choose a violin of his own. In 1878, Dr George moved his family to Lake Village, Indiana. Ervin Rainford said that the criticism resulting from the McElvain smallpox case weighed heavily on Dr George's mind. This resulted in his leaving the Kankakee area and moving his family to Lake Village. He knew that regardless of the medical attention given, there was no cure for smallpox. If Dr George had taken the case, many more would have died. Dr George took care of the Communities ills in Lake Village, Indiana. The last baby delivered by him was his own grandson, Lawrence, son of Albert and Effie. His reverence for his medical oath was shown to all. In the end it was the cause of his own death. One night Dr George retired early for the night because of illness. His son John came asking for help for an ailing child. (Some say a man came from Schneider begging for help for his twins which he feared had developed pneumonia). John's mother sent him to Momence, Illinois for another doctor but his trip was in vain. John returned again to ask for his father's help. Hearing the commotion, Dr. George immediately dressed and left with him on horseback. The Kankakee River was flooded and the horse refused to go across. The doctor walked and swam across himself. After attending the child(ren) he returned home. The child(ren) recovered. As a result of exposure, Dr. George died March 6, 1892. He is laid to rest at the Village Cemetery under Catholic rites. Rev. Father Niberg of Rensselaer conducted the ceremony. No greater love has a man than to lay down his life for another. Margaret died Nov 27, 1908 and is buried beside him. Joliet Twp, household 116 line 9 Harriet Strickland Rainford died in 1851. The newspaper account said: "Mrs. Rainford's sickness was caused by fatigue endured whilst attending to her sickly family which brought on a complication of diseases that terminated in her death and deprived her friends of a skillful, tender, and benevolent nurse. She will be long remembered by those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She leaves a husband and four children to deplore her loss". Two of her children died before her death. This article was on October 14, 1851 in the Joliet Sentinel Newspaper. The paper listed 40 acres with George Charles Rainford as the Grantee and Robert Corlett as the Grantor.

The only things Leonard Mashino remembers of his grandmother was of her sitting in the kitchen rocking and smoking a white clay pipe, which women did in those days; and that when she passed away, his father took him in the bedroom, uncovered her face, and had him look. He was 5 years old and that memory is a lasting one. Obituary: Margaret Wilcox, daughter of Amsey and Margaret Wilcox, was born at Little York, -------, Sept 26, 1832, and died at Lake Village, Indiana, Nov 28, 1908, aged 76 years, 2 months, and 2 days. In the year 1847, at the age of 15, she with her parents moved to Bourbonnais, Kankakee County, Illinois. She was united in Marriage to Dr. George Rainford of near Kankakee, in 1854, and in the spring of 1878 they moved to Lake Village where he followed his profession until his death on March 6, 1892. To this union were born twelve children, one of whom is dead, Mrs. Alice Rouse. The surviving children are Mrs. John Slusser of Pasadena, CA, Mrs. Ben Rouse of Medaryville, Indiana, Mrs. Reuben Gundy of Rose Lawn, Indiana, Mrs. John Mashino, William, Herbert, Albert, Walter, John, and Fred Rainford, all of Lake Village. Besides these she leaves four step children, Robert and George Rainford and Mrs. Elizabeth Franklin of Wilmington, Illinois, Mrs. Harriet Corlett of Rock Creek, Illinois, 42 grand children, 17 great-grand children, and a host of friends. Mrs. Rainford was a kind and loving mother, and her influence for good will long be felt. In her husband's professional career, Mrs. Rainford ministered her help to her friends and neighbors in need. Though her virtues were many, her faults were few. Calling on her children to the last, giving them good advice with a loving kiss and a last good-bye, she bid farewell to her earthly duties. This should be a living monument in the minds of all who knew her. She was known as "Grandma" by all. Funeral services were held from the home Monday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Father Zetsler of Goodland. A large concourse of sorrowing friends followed the remains to their final resting place in the Lake Village Cemetery. You asked me what my dear mother died with she had congestive chills, and lung fever too. Mother had the first chill a Thursday night and she did not have another one till Tuesday and the third one she had Saturday night from nine oclock until two in the morning and then she told me that the chill had stopped and then she said she was burning up with fevor. Mother always told us that she was not going to die until about 3oclock the morning she died. She always told us that she was going to live for us children and about 3 oclock she prayed to die to get out of her misery and pains. Didn't I tell you the other time I wrote about what she had where she died? Grandma I would tell you more that mother said but it would make you feel to bad to tell you that she said George will come home from the hospital tomorrow with father. You asked me what we was a going to do. I think we will stay here on the farm, where our mother died at. It is awful hard to get along without mother, for something and I do not know how to go work to do it and I have to do it by guess and if I do not do it right the first time then I do it again and try another way and that is the way I do to get along. Grandma George he just came home since I was writing this letter When I began he was not here But he has to go back tomorrow again. Oh if he could stay with us we would not be half so lonesome. Is Uncle Fred and Uncle Walt staying home with you Grandma? I hope I could see you and have a good talk with you about some things. I will send you one of our pictures that looks just like mother when she died. Every body thought that mamma looked so nice and pretty I only wich you could have seen her before she died. Papa tried to telegraph to you but he could not find the operator he was not in. This is about all I can think of this time so write soon. Poor little Rollian calls mamma so much and asks us if she is up where the stars are and if she will never come back again. Rollian and I went to the grave yard where Mamma was buried and saw the home that our sweet mother has got forever. George is not staying at the hospital now he is staying at Dawsons. Write as soon as this reaches you from Maggie Rouse to Grandma. Good by all Please excuse my poor writing for I feel so bad I can not hardly write at all. Maggie Crowe

NcCellen Twp, household 3 line 9 Notes for "INA" NINE GERTRUDE HANSEN: Census Info:1920 Indiana, Newton Co. NcCellen Twp, household 3 line 9 Marriage Notes for ERVIN RAINFORD and "INA" HANSEN: Ervin devoted his entire life to farming. As a teenager he and a friend would rent vacant land, camp out in a tent, and farm until the last ear of corn was husked. (early Spring - late Fall). Ervin and Ina's first home was on 160 acres in Enos Indiana. They rented this farm from Ray Cummings. The New York Central Railroad cut this farm in half. Later a railroad station, Enos elevator, Oak Grove school, Willow Inn, and Route 41 were built on this farmland. On March 23, 1907, Viola Mary was born. She was their only child. The family lived on this farm until 1930. Due to the "Great Depression and the fact that his son-in-law had been laid off from work, Ervin decided to rent a much bigger farm from John Colbourn. It was north and west of Enos. Ervin and Raymond worked together but the depression was very hard on them. Corn was selling at 10 cents a bushel and eggs were 10 cents a dozen. One winter, the family burned corn instead of coal because it was cheaper and gave as much or maybe more heat. They managed to get through. Raymond found other work; so Ervin had to hire help. Then World War II came along and help was so hard to find. Ervin's health started to fail, so he thought he would semi-retire. He sold most of the farm machinery and bought a home in Morocco, Indiana. Ervin still owned 160 acres east of Enos and continued to farm a year or two until his health got so bad he couldn't farm anymore. He rented out the farm on shares after that. They were members of the Methodist church. They lived ten years in Morocco until Ervin died on Tuesday, May 21, 1963 in George Ade Hospital in Brook. Ina lived in Morocco until her health began to fail and she went to stay with her daughter. Ina needed more care than Viola could give so Ina was then placed in a nursing home in Kentland. Later she moved to a new home, "Holiday Manor" at Roselawn where Ina died on June 7, 1978. Both are buried in Lake Village Cemetery by their parents and grandparents. 39.
