She was born June 27, 1783 in Perquimans County, North Carolina (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died in Henry County, Iowa (Source: www.rootsweb.com.).
From The Thelen and Margraf Family Tree (Michelle Margraf) on rootsweb: Enos and Lydia removed from Springfield Monthly Meeting in North Carolina to Westfield Monthly Meeting in Hamilton County, Indiana by certificate dated August 10, 1836 and later to Salem Monthly Meeting, Iowa in 1837. His will is recorded in Henry County, Iowa and he is buried in the Cedar Creek Friends Cemetery in Henry County, Iowa. 157 years ago, Enos Mendenhall was building his first log cabin on the farm that is still in the family (as of the 1990s) He had entered 80 acres SW 1/4 section 36 around 1838. The cabin stood near the present Maxwell home. The log cabin burned down in 1840, before it was entirely completed. The log cabin was rebuilt immediately and was located where the wood house stood in 1933. The log cabin had wooden hinges and a wooden latch on the door. To lock the door one pulled the latch string inside. Enos said "the latch string was always out". Enos lived west of Denova for two years and while there cut logs for the house and for the fence for the farm, which is the current Maxwell place. Enos attended Salem Monthly Meeting. The home was rebuilt in 1901 and the south barn in 1902. Pamela was 19 when they came to Iowa. She and her sister Asenath worked at a hotel in Ft. Madison during the winters to help pay for the home place, where Joann Cornell and her husband now live. Pamela married Charles Maxwell in 1846. From a news article in Mt. Pleasant News. FRANCIS4 MENDENHALL (MOSES3, MOSES2, MORDECAI I1) was born November 19, 1790 in Springfield, North Carolina (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died September 23, 1865 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). He married (1) MARY TAYLOR Abt 1810 (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). She was born in Guilford County, North Carolina (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died Abt 1814 (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). He married (2) "POLLY" MARY ALBERTSON March 17, 1816 in Wayne County, Indiana (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). She was born November 2, 1799 (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died March 28, 1864 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana (Source: www.rootsweb.com.).
Francis and his family were mentioned in the 1850 census for District 52, Huntington Co., Indiana. It mentioned Francis was 60 years old, occupation was a farmer, was born in North Carolina he could not read or write. It said the value of his property was $300.
From the family notes of Kurt Otto Shelle, Jr.: After his fathers' death, Francis apparently moved to Piney Grove Monthly Meeting, Marlborough County, South Carolina together with his mother, Grandfather Mendenhall, maternal Grandparents, John and Molly Clark Thomas, and his siblings. This was about January 3, 1807. By December or January of 1808 he was back at the Springfield Monthly Meeting. On January 6, 1810 Francis was disowned by the Springfield Monthly Meeting for marrying "out of the unity", or marrying a non-Quaker. I can find no record of this marriage. However, there was a Mary Albertson who was also a member of the Springfield Monthly Meeting who had been disowned on December 2, 1809. From the references we have it appears she quit the Quakers. The Quakers did not believe in public marriages, only church weddings. A public (civil) marriage was grounds for being disowned. It appears that if the marriage in 1810 was to Mary Albertson it was done without the benefit of a civil ceremony or the Quakers. We don't know when Francis came to Wayne County, Indiana. His oldest child, Asenath was born on October 15, 1813. His grandparents, John and Molly Clark Thomas, came to Wayne County, Indiana in September 1813. It is possible they came together. In any event, Francis and Mary were married in a civil ceremony in Wayne County, Indiana on March 17, 1816. Why a second wedding, if indeed it was one, is not clear. We don't know when Francis moved to Huntington County, Indiana, but it had to be some period of time prior to 1849. He may have homesteaded and those records are not kept in the county courthouse. The only real estate transaction we found involving Francis stated that Silas Mendenhall conveyed to Francis Mendenhall via warranty deed on June 13, 1833 for the sum of $200 30 acres in Section 29, Township 26, Range 9. Deed recorded March 4, 1854 in book J page 124. He may have purchased this property on a "land contract" and didn't pay off the balance until 1853. This land was in Jefferson Township near the village of Mt. Etna. Francis and Mary were still farming this land in 1860 per the census. We found no record of their deaths in Huntington County. Either their deaths were not recorded (not uncommon at that time) or they spent their last years elsewhere, possibly with one of the children (not Joshua). The March 17, 1816 wedding was a civil ceremony. There could be an earlier marriage in North or South Carolina. Francis was disowned by the Quakers in 1811 for "Marrying out of the Unity". Marriage Records of Wayne Co., Indiana, show that Francis Mendenhall and Polly Albertson received a marriage license on March 17, 1816. Generation No. 524. JOSHUA5 MENDENHALL (FRANCIS4, MOSES3, MOSES2, MORDECAI I1) was born July 9, 1829 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana (Source: www.rootsweb.com.), and died February 27, 1907 in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). He married ELIZABETH YAUGHAR Abt May 24, 1849 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana (Source: www.rootsweb.com.). She was born March 25, 1831 in Dayton County, Ohio (Source: www.rootsweb.com.).
Notes for JOSHUA M. MENDENHALL: From the family notes of Kurt Otto Schelle, Jr.: Joshua was a farmer most of his life. After he moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1879 or 1880 he spent the remainder of his working years as a laborer. It appears that until about 1870 he worked for other farmers, most likely his father and/or his father-in-law. However, he was not listed in the 1860 census for Huntington County, Indiana. At that time he may have been in Ohio with his sister and brother-in-law (Charles and Mary Ann Taylor). In any event by 1870 he was back in Huntington County. Per the 1870 census and probably living on the Yaughgar farm. My grandmother said they lived on the "Banks of the Wabash" (River) when she was born in 1866. The Yaughgar farm was in Dallas Township, which the Wabash River flowed through. Joshua and Elizabeth Mendenhall homesteaded 60 acres just outside the village of Penn in Cass County, Michigan. They moved there sometime during 1870. However, before they could move, Joshua took the older boys with him to Michigan to build a house and barn so the family would have a place to live. The 80-90 mile trip was made via oxen drawn wagon. (We have a picture of this home that was taken about 1928-29). When we took Grandmother up to see if we could find it, the people who lived there were very gracious and invited her, Mom, and Aunt Bess in to look around. Don, Uncle Irvin, and I remained in the car down by the road. In the early 60s we took Mom up again (about 30 miles from Goshen) but the place was abandoned, the barn had fallen in its tracks and the house needed a lot of repair (the original house had fallen in its tracks too). The move was made via the same ox drawn wagon(s) with Great-Grandmother and the small children aiding in the wagon and Great-Grandfather and the older children walking alongside or in front of the wagon. What livestock they had walked too. I don't know about chickens, ducks, etc...perhaps they were replaced in Michigan. However, they did have to eat along the way. Joshua believed in sending his daughters to school as well as his sons. On the frontier this was not a universally held belief. In fact, according to information from within the family he taught in the school during the winter months. Consequently, Grandmother had the advantage of the education that was available to her. By today's standards it was very inadequate. Joshua and Elizabeth raised their family in the Dunkerd Brethren Church. Whether this is the church Francis and Mary Mendenhall attended after the Quakers disowned them or it was the church of the Yaughgar family is unknown. I have been told the Dunkerds are about as close to the Quakers as you could get. Also, I have been told the Uaghgars were "Pennsylvania Dutch". As such they could easily have belonged to the Dunkerd Brethren Church which allegedly had roots in Germany. It could have been either way or a combination of the two. Joshua and Elizabeth met somewhere and their homes were not very close to each other by the standards of that time. Things seemed to be going well on the farm in Cass County when son, John, left home rather abruptly. A short time later a neighbor showed up to claim the entire year's crop. He had a bill of sale signed by John. John had sold the crop, pocketed the money, and disappeared to parts unknown. Joshua said "if my son sold the crop it is the same as if I sold it." So he honored the transaction, turned over the crop, and lost the farm. This was the reason for the move to South Bend, where work could be found. The 1880 census for St. Joseph County, Indiana lists Joshua Mendenhall as a laborer and indicates he had "lung fever" (pneumonia). It lists his wife and the following children: Joshua, Elizabeth, Anna, Lucinda, and Elihu. Joshua managed to support his wife and himself and family until they left home. Joshua and Elizabeth celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1899 and Joshua died in 1907 about 5 months shore of his 78th birthday. Census Info:
