2. PIERRE2 CRESSON (PIERRE1) was born 1609 in
Aisne, Menil La Cresson, Abbeville, Picardy France (Source: Susan
Gall.), and died August 3, 1681 in Staten Island, Richard County, New
York (Source: Susan Gall.). He married RACHEL CLAUS June 5, 1639 in
Aisne, Seden, Ardennes, Picardy France (Source: Susan Gall.), daughter
of PIERRE CLAUS and JEANNE FAMELAR. She was born Abt 1615 (Source: Susan
Gall.), and died Aft. 1690 (Source: Susan Gall.).
Pierre was born at the Cresson Manor a little northeast of Abbeville,
in Picardy. It extended across the present parts of Somme and Aisne. The
Picards were descendants of both Belgae and Celtae. They were tall and
looked like the Walloons, proud, spirited, generous, honest, and
religious. They may have been related to the Cressons of Burgandy.
He went to Sluis (Silus) in Flanders and by 1640 was found among
refugees in Leyden. He left in 1657 for New Amstel (New Castle Del.)
from Amsterdam. In 1641 Gov. Stuyvesant engaged him to go to Manhattan.
Soon after he made a trip to Holland, returning on the ship, "De
Bever", "The Beaver", which sailed from Amsterdam on
April 25, 1659, arriving in 6 weeks.
Pierre was appointed commissary (Judge) to New Haarlem, on August 16,
1660. He was a corporal of first company in 1663 in the expedition
against the Indians a Esopus. He and Rachel made a joint will on March
15, 1763 leaving 50 guilders to the church at New York.
His land in NY was where the Bowery is and he raised many beautiful
flowers in his yard to such an extent that his neighbors emulated his
example and the street became known as the "Bower" ... so it
was because of Pierre that the Bowery was so named.
In 1679 he sold his lands in Harlem and moved to Staten Island where
he obtained a lot at or near Long Neck by the Fresh Kill on the
northwest side of the island. Pierre, or Moy Pier Cresson, Pierre
LeGardinier has been gardener of the Prince William of Orange.
Possibly born in Delft, Holland rather than France.
In the New Haarlem Militia in 2nd Esopis War.
Was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Harlem where several of
his children were baptized and married. (see Dr. Van Name, "Pierre
Cresson, the Huguenot of Staten Island", Riker's "History of
New Harlem")
Pierre and his son Joshua each had grants of 88 acres on the
northwest side of Staten Island surveyed to them December 4, 1689,
patents issued Dec 30, 1680.

From Sept 1988 issue of the Yadkin County Historical Journal:
Abraham's ancestor, Pierre Creson, A French Huguenot, escaped from
France (during the persecution by the Catholics of the Protestant
Huguenots) to Holland, where he worked as a gardener to the Dutch Duke
of Orange. He migrated to America in 1649 and was called by Peter
Stuyvesant [Governor of New Amsterdam (New York)] to be Stuyvesant's
gardener. Pierre had several children, among them an Abraham and a
Joshua, one of whom is supposed to be the ancestor of our Abraham, who
came to the Yadkin Valley from Pennsylvania with the earliest settlers
and had land surveyed on the west side of Shallow Ford in 1748,
indicating that he was living on it at that time. His land was at the
mouth of South Deep Creek. Eventually he acquired most of that fertile
tract now known as the "Dinkins Bottom".
Rev. Soelle, the itinerant Moravian minister, recorded in 1771 that
Abraham was living below the mouth of Deep Creek near the Yadkin River.
He kept a store near his home, probably at what is now called
Huntsville, though this was long before the town was incorporated and
developed by Charles Hunt in the 1790's. He became a well-known figure
thereabouts, and was one of the leaders of the Regulator movement in the
late 1760s and early 1770s, in which the frontiersmen sought to regulate
the crown officials in county seat towns like Hillsboro and Salisbury,
who were charging the settlers exorbitant fees for marriage licenses and
settling estate and recording deeds and wills.
Creson (or Abraham Crosson as he is referred to here) wrote a letter
to Herman Husbands, leader of the Regulators, telling of going with a
widow to Salisbury to settle her husband's estate, whereupon royal clerk
Frohock asked Creson if she were in good circumstances. Creson answered
that she was in "very good [circumstances] & had money by her;
if that be the Case the Col [Frohock] than I must double the bill.
Abraham Creson was one of the Regulator leaders at the Battle of
Alamance in 1771. Creson was first ordered to be hung with other
leaders, but eventually he was taken in chains to Salem and put in the
stocks there for a while, until he was released upon taking a strong
oath to the British crown. Like many Regulators who had taken that oath,
Abraham did not take a leading part in the Revolution against the
British, but it is known that the Patriot forces camped on his land
prior to their skirmish with the Tories west of Huntsville in October
1780.
Creson and his ancestors are said to have become Quakers during their
sojourn in Pennsylvania, but like the Boones and Bryands, other early
settlers nearby, they did not keep the Quaker faith after their arrival
here (the Boones had trouble with the church in Pennsylvania, some of
them marrying "out of unity," i.e. a non-Quaker). Paschal's
Baptist history said that Abraham Creson was a member of Timber Ridge
Baptist Church, which was the name of an old church in Davie County,
though some people think it was also another name for Rev. Joseph
Murphey's church near Shallow Ford (there could have been two Timber
Ridges) near Abraham's home.
Abraham had a mill on Turner's Creek.
No one knows the name of Abraham's first wife. His second wife was
Mary Lewis who first married Tobias Furches and second married Stephen
Lewis.
From Susan Gall's information:
In his will he left son Joshua land on Deep Creek and 225 acres
adjacent on the North side adjacent to Giles Hudspeth. Left wife Mary
the homeplace with 60 acres and 10 acres of the River tract adjacent to
Hudspeth. Daughter Jane was left 250 acres on the Yadkin river adjacent
to Turner. Other land to be sold to pay debts.
Abraham came to what was then Anson County in 1748 from Augusta
County, Virginia. He was appointed Constable in Rowan County in 1754.
September 21, 1759 he received and Granville grant for 688 acres in
Rowan on the west side of the Yadkin River and both sides of Deep Creek.
He also had land along the Salisbury Rd. and on Garner's Branch. Captain
of Militia Surry County district in 1775.
Had 468 acres at the mouth of Deep Creek. Established a store at
Shallow Ford the crossing by which thousands of families passed in their
migration down the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road to western North
Carolina, then into Georgia and other states.
One of the leader's in the Regulator's War, was arrested and
imprisoned at Bethabara but miraculously eventually let go.
Rev. Solle, a Moravian minister noted in his diary that Abraham
Creson was a "good-natured" man, well-liked by his
neighbors."

George Forbush.

Asa Reavis was a farmer and operated a government distillery. Nearly
every whiskey maker in those days was a "government
distiller", but it was whiskey made and hidden from the government
tax man, upon which no tax was paid, that they made their money on.

In July 1862, Joseph and his two brothers went down to Davie County
and joined Captain William E Booe's Partisan Rangers. The two second
Lieutenants of the regiment were John C Howell and Joseph H Howell,
first cousins of the Brandon boys. It was a sign of high status in the
community to be elected an officer of a local regiment.
A Partisan Ranger Company in the Civil War often operated
independently of the regular army. James Wall's history of Davie County
says that Captain Booe's Company was operating under "the Partisan
Ranger Act of the Confederate Congress allowing the captor to claim
property captured from the enemy." Mostly, until 1863, Partisan
Ranger Companies operated in eastern North Carolina where the Yankee
troops were. Wall says the Brandon boys' Company H went to eastern North
Carolina and saw little action until May 1863, when they were ordered to
join Lee's Army in Virginia. Company H reached Lee's army just before
the battle of Gettysburg and participated "in the last part of that
battle and covered the retreat of Lee's Army across the Potomac and into
Virginia."
"The regiment", Wall Continues, "sent home during the
winter of 1863-64 to recruit men and horses, reassembled at Henderson,
North Carolina, in April, 1864." This was the period when there was
so much strife in Yadkin County between the Home Guard and men who hid
out rather than be drafted. Soldiers from Captain John Connally's
regiment came into the county looking for deserters and draft dodgers.
Anderson Shore, a deserter, was summarily executed near his father's
mill on Harmon Creek, when the Confederates found him.
Numbering just over 500 men in April, 1864, the Brandon boys' Company
rejoined Lee's Army in Virginia.
By this time, however, their cousin, Lt. John Howell was at home,
resigning in 1862 because of bad health, not long after the Company was
formed.
Joseph Brandon was not with the Company then, either. He was captured
in the retreat from Gettysburg at Hagerstown, Maryland, in July 1863 and
confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was paroled and exchanged at
City Point, Virginia, in March 1864 and was present or accounted for up
until Feb 1865. Joseph was 29 when he enlisted and spent nearly three
years in the war.
His cousin Lt. Joseph Howell was also captured, paroled, exchanged
and then was listed as absent without leave beginning in July 1864.
After the war, Joseph Brandon lived out his life on his land
inherited from his father-in-law William Reavis, Jr. and his father
Thomas Brandon, on South Deep Creek.
