Mrs. Mary Bewick passed away at the home of her son, Robert Bewick, Saturday evening following a paralytic stroke suffered two weeks previously. For three days preceding her death she has been unconscious, last recognizing those about her Wednesday of last week. She had been suffering from Diabetes for several years but appeared to be in better health this winter than previously.

Mrs. Bewick, whose maiden name was Mary Hollis, was born in the county of Durham, England, on March 9, 1859. She was married in 1885 to George Bewick and they came to America in 1906, settling on a homestead near Fishtrap, where they resided for 15 years. They then came to Sprague and "Grandma" as she was known to her friends and neighbors, both young and old, lived here the remainder of her life, except for short visits to Gillespie, Illinois and Kellogg, Idaho. Her husband passed away Jan 31, 1928, eight years and a day before her death.

Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Robson, Gillespie, Illinois; two sons, Robert, of Sprague and Harry, of Kellogg; fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bewick was an unusually ambitious woman for one 76 years of age and up to a year ago kept her own garden at her home on Second street. She suffered a light stroke nine months ago but seemed to have regained her health and was in a happy mood on the evening the stroke occurred, Jan 20.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Monday afternoon. The sermon was given by Rev L.N. Williams, paster of the Millwood Community Presbyterian church, an old friend who was a frequent speaker at the Fishtrap church when Mrs. Bewick resided there, Mrs. L.A. Plankenhorn sang two solos, accompanied by Mrs. A.L. Hamley.

Interment took place in the Maccabee Cemetery beside the graves of husband and her adopted daughter, Jennie, who died in 1912.

Newspaper clipping: SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IS OBSERVED HERE Mr. and Mrs. R. Bewick Married Here in 1907 - Celebrate Three Nuptial Events

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bewick celebrated their silver wedding anniversary Sunday at their home here, with a number of relatives and friends in attendance. They were married in Sprague (Washington) by Rev. J. Edwards Wednesday, December 20, 1907. Rev. Edwards was paster of what is now the Federated church, just the second building from the present Bewick home.

Congratulated Saturday Night ---- Saturday night a group of Sprague friends gathered at the Bewick home to congratulate the couple and present their well wishes, among these being Mr. and Mrs. E.I. Wurman, Mr. and Mrs. John Lazzaro, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brown and Woodrow Simpson.

Sunday dinner guests included Mr. and Mrs. E.I. Wurman and two sons, Mrs. George Bewick, Miss Vivian Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brwon and Woodrow Simpson, and the Bewick boys Elmer, Joe, Clarence, and Glen, all of Sprague; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bolam and son Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bolam and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Hoffman, all of Kellogg. The affair was also a double wedding dinner for the two latter couples, since they were married the day before in Spokane, Mrs. Hoffman and Mr. Bolam being daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Bolam and therefore niece and nephew of Mr. and Mrs Bewick.

Here to stay ------- After Robert Bewick and Mary Ann Wright were married in 1907 they lived at Tyler for a time and then spent the rest of the time at Sprague except for a couple years in Illinois and six years in Oregon. The last time they returned they purchased a home and have decided to make their residence permanently here. "Sprague is a pretty good place after all," states Mrs. Bewick.

A number of beautiful silver gifts were received including a complete set of tableware, a gift from Miss Florence Bewick, a daughter, who was unable to attend the dinner. On of the outstanding gifts, however, was a framed carving of the Lord's prayer about two by two and one-half feet, a gift from Mr. Bolam, who is a brother-in-law of the Bewicks. The carving was done by Mr. Bolam, and is exquisitely decorated with scroll work and angels and is decidedly intricate. A bright green background shows up the two colors of wood used to excellent advantage.
