1-4-2008 1:45 PM January Update

Uncharted waters have just been entered - "again". Columbus had it easy compared to the shark invested waters I'm trying to chart my way thru. LOL

Yesterday I finished planning the front sponsons flat, they are ready to have new Okoume wood installed (down the road a little ways yet). The deck was all prepared for new Okoume before we rolled the boat over. Once it is rolled back over to right side up, the work should accelerate - hopefully....

Today it was all the way UP to 40 degrees. So I worked on the back end of the boat. Four feet of the bottom has been removed so that new Okoume wood can be attached. This will remove the LAST of the bad wood. After the battens are sanded and leveled, the router will be used on the transom to remove 6 mm of the old wood and inlay 6 mm of NEW Okoume wood to the transom. This event will actually be turning the BIG corner of our restoration project. YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!

There is still some HAND cutting to do on the piece removed. The router will only get so close to the sides. I did manage to get the center piece cut out in one piece. That will help me when I have to cut the hole in the bottom for the new shaft strut and shaft log.

When the new transom is in place, put the bottom section back on and keep marching forward.

If the weather stays where it is, progress should continue to marching forward. I'm hoping to be finished with the woodwork by spring so that I can start varnishing the bottom.

The circular thing on the boat is Bob's new heater so he can work outside a little sooner

1-3-2008 8:03 PM Construction Pictures (original ones)

I took these pictures for a guy in Missouri who NOW owns the boat that is being built back in the right rear corner. He didn't have any pictures of the boat being built and you know I don't throw anything away (unless it's something I will need later, then it is either given away or thrown away... LOL). The main picture subject of course is our boat while it was under construction in 1981. They are photos from our N-22 Photo album. I would never have undertaken this project without all the pictures that Kathy took yrs ago. This week I took them with MY digital camera by the sliding glass door.

Also in the pictures are Mike Hanson who built our boat. Russ Hagg who owned the other boat being built, Jeff Campbell (who later became a Miss Budweiser crew member) ME, our sponsor Randy DeMoss, a friend from work Frankie Rubel

Russ's boat (now Dan's) is also sitting with ours at the Seattle Coliseum during the Speed Show (his is the rainbow colored one).

A couple of other pictures are of the Atlas Van Lines in Don's shop next to our boat. This was just after Bill Muncey was killed in Acapulco Mexico in that boat (if he had the new cockpits, he might still be very much alive).

Different subject..... today I got VERY, VERY brave and started removing the back 4' of the bottom of the boat... Man oh man is that scary...... it was warmer today, so I got to work out there for a little longer (it was up to 34 degrees). Tomorrow I will continue to remove that portion of the bottom. Pictures when it is removed so you can see what I'm talking about.

Status.. the deck is ready for the new wood, the two sponsons are now ready for new wood. After the the bottom 4' is removed and prepared, it will be ready for new wood..... she will be turning the corner and becoming a race boat again.
