8-31-2007  3:27PM   First Step

Today I took the first step towards restoring the bottom. I removed the black paint from the right non-trip. Lots more to remove, but it showed fantastic wood under the paint. Still can't figure out why it was painted. But it will be all natural upon completion. I had just taken a damp towel to the wood, so it still shows the water before it dried. When it dried - WOW.

One picture is shows the paint has been removed and you can still see the paint that has yet to be removed from the sponson. BIG DIFFERENCE. Another picture is with Kathy NEW camera, you can see all the dust flying in the air. Another picture you can see the wood, the black paint and what ever that white stuff is between the black and wood.

Maybe tomorrow I will get started on the right sponson. Then the other side and then the actual bottom.

Don, do you recommend taking the putty out of the screw holes and replace with new putty?

8-19-2007 2:43pm Pre-Roll Over

Hi Don. I'm setting up for the Tuesday rollover and I was wondering if you could look over my setup and see if you can see any potential problems. I will have lots of people here, so if this doesn't work, we can manually do it with the strap assisting.

I'm trying to decide if I should run a second bolt thru the chain to relieve any stress on that single point. I think all the other places are pretty secure.

I used your rope tying trick to make a loop.

8-17-2007 4:22 PM  Polished Stuff

After polishing metal for MOST of the week - I will stop for a while. I'm sure more will be done down the road (previous aluminum that will be going to back into the boat during re-assembly).

If you look at the pictures of the engine mounts, you can see the starter motor reflecting in it. The rear motor mount you can see the engine stand.  Excuse the dust, I have been sanding all week and buffing, so the dust is getting KNEE deep. All the shinny metal was dull on Monday and BRIGHT on Friday.

Also in the pictures is the engine to prop shaft coupler. That is very important and hard to find - YIPPEE that item can be checked off. There is another coupler on the prop shaft and a chain attaches to the two together for direct drive.

Tuesday is boat roll over day. We will be having Alaska Pale Ale, Coeur d' Alene Cellars wine and snacks for the folks who are coming over.

8-16-2007 9:01 PM   For Giggles

This note is mostly for GIGGLES. I wasn't totally happy with the skid fin, so I took scotch brite to the side we polished yesterday, then the back side. Did one of the three motor mounts (the other two will be tomorrow). Both side of the skid fin, both sides of the motor mount.

Now, I was talking on the phone today with Don Kelson and he said  - "You know you need to do the steering quadrant now". We both laughed and I said I figured that was going to happen. Tonight after getting home from working at the winery, I polished the quadrant so it will match all the rest of the bright work.

You know if you can't go fast - chrome it - or polish the aluminum....

Tuesday we roll the boat upside down. I will start the stripping of the paint, repairing the sponsons and spar varnish all the NATURAL wood.

8-15-2007 8:54PM  Skid Fin

Rod said he wanted to see it polished, well guess what I did it tonight. Only one side - you know the side that shows. One picture is of the unpolished side and the other is the polished side, can you tell the difference????

Now I'm thinking about polishing the engine mounts and then doing the gold anodized stuff I bought from Eastwood. Might look pretty spiffy.

8-15-2007 12:14 PM  Skid Fin

Today I picked up the skid fin from the machine shop. Earlier after I bought the aluminum, then cut it to the correct shape (after breaking the shopsmith belt and burning up a saber saw). I don't have the tool required to cut the edge. So off the machine shop it went and let the experts do it. He cut a nice SHARPE edge for us.

The skid fin is 1/2" thick 6061 T6 heat treated aluminum. Should make this baby turn on a dime and give 9.5 cents change.

The bolts you see are only temporary, new grade 8 bolts will be used. I just wanted to check to see if I drilled the holes correctly in the skid fin after getting it back from the machine shop. Also attached are pictures of the new stainless steel turn buckle support rod. Looks like it will do the job of holding the skid fin in the correct alignment.
