4-29-2007  9:48PM  Moses Lake

This week-end I went to the Moses Lake boat race. I got to meet up with many old friends. I met 40+ friends who remembered me. Many people I didn't know came up to me and said are you Bob Bolam and others who heard I was there and wanted to meet me.

I also got to re-new my crew duties on for an owner I used to crew for 31 yrs ago. It is the Buccaneer - E-101. There are two, father with his vintage boat (the one I mostly worked on all week-end), his son with a modern capsule boat (pictures enclosed).

The weather was windy so we had trouble on the water. One was more serious, but luckily turned out okay. A rookie driver thought his boat stall and might be on fire, he got out of his safety capsule, was standing on the deck looking at the engine compartment and another boat who didn't see him, ran right up the back of the boat, just missed the driver (pictures enclosed).

There were 8 or more boats that had damage and either sank or took on water.

Pictures of some of the vintage boats are also included.

I had a great time, learned more info on how to restore our boat and can't wait to go again - maybe one day with our vintage boat....

4-18-2007  1:47 PM  Day Two

Here are some pictures from day two. I took my paint remover wheel and went into the black paint to see if there was good wood. To my surprise I found nice wood. Course it's only a small section, but I was happy with what I saw. I did one pickle area and one area on the laid over non-trip.

No major surprises. Several places where sponson runners were repaired on both sponsons, but since I'm going to put new sponson runners on to fix the holes anyway in each sponson, I can replace those sponson batons at that time.

All the deck batons are great. They have come loose at some frames, but that may be more me, then mother time. As I take the deck off, it might loosen the batten.

I was very worried about the plywood in the sponson tips. They are fantastic. I'm very impressed with how it looks. Cleaning up the area in the sponsons, then clean and sand the center section - and re-finish.

I think the only real problem area is the right airtrap - where the aluminum was added. Maybe I can make a doubler like I will for the engine rails. I'll know more after I get it off. There are lots of holes from the screws and the original crack in the airtrap is still there. But I will wait til it is rolled over.

It is so nice to have those drawings. I thing I can make the engine rail doubler from the drawing and get it nearly perfect. Thank you again for those wonderful drawings.

4-15-2007 4:29 PM   Home

We are home, safe and sound - no incidence at all. No rain, not much wind and everything stayed on the trailer. Can't wait to get started.

Thank you to everyone who helped bringing her home. She already has a smile on her pickles.
